Counsel
John Ehrett, based in Washington, D.C., is an advisor and litigator who brings to the firm extensive experience in law and policy, spanning all three branches of the federal government. Most recently, he served as Chief of Staff and Attorney Advisor to Commissioner Mark Meador at the Federal Trade Commission, where he led the Commissioner’s team of attorneys and staff, managed external and international affairs and public relations, and provided legal advice on multibillion-dollar competition and consumer protection lawsuits and settlements.
Prior to that, he worked in the Office of General Counsel at the U.S. Department of Education, where he served as the principal legal advisor overseeing the migration of Department functions to other federal agencies. John also served as chief counsel to U.S. Senator Josh Hawley, where he was the Senator’s top legal advisor on issues including constitutional law, technology policy, judicial nominations, criminal law, antitrust, and ethics. As lead Republican counsel for the Senate Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law, John spearheaded the first Senate hearings with leading artificial intelligence companies, featuring testimony from Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, and others, and managed high-stakes investigations and whistleblower testimony. Earlier in his career, John was an associate at a major international law firm, where he represented Fortune 500 clients in complex commercial litigation at both trial and appellate stages. He clerked for Judge James Ho on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and for Judge Alex Kozinski on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. John is a graduate of Yale Law School, where he was features and book reviews editor of the Yale Law Journal, and Patrick Henry College. He is admitted to the bars of Virginia and the District of Columbia.
